When to get a flu shot
September and October
The CDC says September and October are generally good times to be vaccinated against flu. Ideally, everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October.
Fall and winter season
In the United States, flu season usually occurs in the fall and winter, and most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February.
About two weeks
According to the CDC, it takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body.
Who should get a flu vaccine
The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older in the United States, with rare exception, get a flu vaccine every season.
For the 2026-2027 season, the CDC reports that all three virus components in U.S. flu vaccines were updated compared with last season, including a change to the influenza A(H3N2) component.
